Theresa was suddenly afraid. How many of King Peter’s soldiers had the abbess taken with her? Not all, certainly. A few had to be left behind to defend the convent against the French.

This meant Theresa was alone with a pack of violent men. With the abbess gone, there was nothing to restrain them. What might they do to her? She had given the soldiers the rough edge of her tongue in the past. Now they could take a hideous revenge. The mere thought of it made her tremble.

“My lady.” Theresa gave a start. One of the soldiers had appeared in the archway of the nave. He was their captain, a burly fellow in middle age, half-blind in one eye. At least he was sober, she reflected, and kept his men in reasonably good order. When one dared to disobey, the captain beat the man unconscious with his bare fists.
